Dave McAllister, the engineering manager at LASCO Fittings, Inc., located in Brownsville, TN, shares his thoughts about SolidWorks and Concepts In Production, LLC. Dave’s company creates PVC pipe fittings using injection molding. “Our products and molds are designed in house. Most of our products have a simple geometry and the cam programmer had the liberty to blend areas that could not be defined in two dimensions. Solid models provide us a forward vision of product appearance and marketing’s approval prior to building a mold.” SolidWorks has greatly reduced the time it takes Dave to create designs. “We have a series of molds that hang at 14 degrees in the injection molding machine. We must locate the center of gravity for each configuration so that an eye bolt can be properly positioned to allow the mold to hang in the correct orientation. SolidWorks determines the center of gravity in second’s verses hours of hand calculations.” Dave told us that by using SolidWorks to calculate the center of gravity, he has saved $3000 in design time on that portion of the project alone. Dave admits his company was slow to change from 2D to 3D. He tells us, “We are guilty of resisting the change to 3D technology, but CIP has been patient, persistent, and an encourager. Now that we have broken the barrier, I see us moving into better designs in shorter time and possibly into greater customer support with 3D product drawings.” In closing Dave also shared his experiences with CIP. “I think that CIP goes beyond a business relationship.
