Environmental Impact Factors Defined>>
Carbon Footprint - consists of
greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, such as the carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and
methane, which are released in manufacture and delivery of the product
and by the prodcut itself at the end of its life.
Air Impacts -
refers to the acid
rain caused by the release of certain pollution gases. Acid rain
damages forests, depletes solis, and harms wildlife.
Water Impacts-
occurs when nitrates and phosphates from detergents to
fertilizers - reach fresh and marine waters. Total Energy Consumed -
refers to all forms of energy the design consumes and releases
over its life cycle.
SolidWorks Sustainability provides a practical tool for implementing corporate sustainability strategies at the product design level. Four key environmental indicators are considered: carbon footprint, total energy consumed, impacts as to air, and impacts to water. The software allows you to evaluate these indicators across the projected lifecycle of your design, from raw materials and production, through use and end-of-life. SolidWorks Sustainability lets you model different materials and design solutions, and then compare the effects.

Apply the science of life cycle assessment earlier in the process - SolidWorks Sustainability is based on the science of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a formal methodology for measuring a design's environmental impact over its entire life cycle, including raw materials extraction, manufacturing, assembly, transportation, product use, and disposal.
Seamlessly integrated with SolidWorks -
SolidWorks Susbainability software lives right in the
SolidWorks Task Pane, it effortlessly becomes a natural part of your
workflow. The data is autmoatically stored in the model file as
standard engineering information for design.
Material Selection Tool - Model different materials and design solutions, and then compare the effects. You can explore the environmental impacts of different materials, resource procurement, transportation requirements, and fabrication approaches - without every leaving the SolidWorks design environment.
Automatically generated Environmental Reports - Instantly generated reports let you demonstrate the real, verifiable steps you've taken to minimize your design's environmental impact. You can show the sustainability profile of your product, before and after comparisons of design alternatives, and the impact of breakdown of complex assemblies -- all complete with your contact information and company branding, if desired.
Gold-Standard Environmental Database - Through a
partnership with the pioneering LCA firm PE Internation, SolidWorks
utilizes the extensive GaBi® life cycle
inventory database. This is the worldwide gold standard for
environmental impact data.
A practical reality - and a competitive advantage - removing the traditional obstacles to sustainable design, making it a seamless part of your design process will enable you to perform a thorough environmental assessment in a way that's simple to understand, apply, and explain.
